Sleeping Beauties

Sleeping Beauties is a participatorial art project created to contribute to the fight against violence against women. The aim of the project is to involve the society through an open call to create art pieces to honour their memories, as well as to report their deaths. The project concept is based in one of the favorite fairy tale of millions of girls in West World: Sleeping Beauty, collected by Brothers Grimm in the 19th century. This is the story of white and blond princess who sleeps for 100 years, waiting to be awakened by the kiss of a brave prince. But the truth contradicts the message of this tale, for many women, married life is a nightmare, their husbands, boyfriends or lovers perform an hegemonic role with violence, battering them in a systematic way and in the worst of the cases, killing them. 
As part of the project it was created an sticker that symbolizes metaphorically the tale and represents the memory of each murdered women. The sticker shows the draw of a displayed bed with a pillow wich contains a handwritten inscription of the number assigned for a murdered victim, as well as the date and the cause of her death. The number of print stickers is the reported number of machista violence deaths from 2001.
To participate it was necesary to request an sticker or stickers by email with a postal address for its delivery. Create a tribute through an object, ceremony, or action using the sticker and register it photographically. Send the photograph by e-mail to the same address in wich participation was requested.  All photographs received were exhibited in a Website. And also the printed photographs have been exhibited in several spaces in Spain. 
From 2007 to 2015, more than 500 stickers were distributed and nearly 300 people from Spain and other countries participated: women and men, artists, artist groups, institutes, civil associations of all kinds, and also those who fight against violence against women.

Bellas Durmientes es un proyecto de arte colaborativo para contribuir a la lucha contra la violencia contra la mujer. El objetivo del proyecto es involucrar a la sociedad a través de una convocatoria abierta para crear piezas de arte que sirvan de denuncia y de homenaje a sus memorias.  El proyecto se basa en uno de los cuentos favoritos de millones de niñas en el mundo occidental: La Bella Durmiente, recogido por los Hermanos Grimm en el siglo XIX. La historia de la princesa blanca y rubia que duerme 100 años esperando ser despertada por el beso de un valiente príncipe.  Pero la realidad de muchas mujeres en España como en cualquier otro país contradice el mensaje de este cuento, sus experiencias de la vida en pareja son una verdadera pesadilla, sus maridos, novios o amantes masculinos ejercen el rol hegemónico con violencia, siendo maltratadas de forma sistemática y en el peor de los casos, siendo asesinadas. 
Como parte del proyecto se ha creado un adhesivo que simboliza metafóricamente el cuento y representa la memoria de cada una de las mujeres asesinadas. El adhesivo contiene el dibujo desplegado de una cama, en la almohada lleva una inscripción manuscrita con un número asignado a una víctima, el año y el motivo de la muerte. La cifra de adhesivos impresos corresponde a la de asesinatos reportados por violencia machista desde 2001. 
Para participar había que solicitar el adhesivo o adhesivos por correo electrónico indicando la dirección de correo postal para su envío, crear un homenaje con el adhesivo a través de un objeto, ceremonia o acción, registrarlo fotográficamente. Y por último, enviar la documentación fotográfica por correo electrónico a la misma dirección donde se solicitó adhesivo. Todas las fotografías recibidas se exhibieron en una página web y también se realizo una versión impresa de cada una de ellas para las exhibiciones físicas en varias partes de España. 
Desde el 2007 al 2015 se repartieron más de 500 adhesivos y participaron cerca de 300 personas de España y otros países: mujeres y hombres, artistas, colectivos de artistas, institutos, asociaciones civiles de todo tipo, y también aquellas que luchan contra la violencia de género.
