Womankind. Les Spectaculaires

Les Spectaculaires is one of the most disturbing series of Womankind. It portrays ten women who were affected by some type of «abnormality.» Women with an exceptional physical condition that made them unique, such as lacking arms or legs, being extremely short or tall, faces covered with hair, or the conjoined bodies of Siamese twins. The original photographs, with which the artist has worked, are from the late 19th and early 20th century, when these women worked in side shows associated with circus and were exhibited as human oddities.

Les Spectaculaires es una de las series más inquietantes de Womankind. Retrata diez mujeres que estuvieron afectadas por algún tipo de “anormalidad”. Mujeres con una condición física excepcional que las hacía únicas, como la carencia de brazos o piernas, la estatura mínima o exagerada, un rostro cubierto de pelo o los cuerpos unidos de las siamesas. Las fotografías originales, sobre las que ha trabajado la artista, son de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, cuando estas mujeres aún trabajaban en circos, donde se exhibían como rarezas humanas.
